Icon of Christ the Good Shepherd with Holy Mary, the Mother of God and Saint Laurent Imbert, the martyr who gave the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd its name
There is a famous quote by Tertullian, “The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church”. In order to build the church, we must seek God in prayer and sacrifices and depend on Him to build it because as Psalm 127 has it, “Unless the Lord builds the house, its labourers labour in vain.”
Saint Laurent Imbert, the martyr through which the first catholic contact with Singapore was made, is depicted carrying the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd and a scroll bearing his famous words to his fellow missionaries before his death, “the good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep”. It was this famous note that contributed to the naming of the cathedral.
Christ the Good Shepherd takes the centre stage as He is the model that St Imbert followed, and He is also our model, the true Shepherd who bears humanity on His shoulders and carries it heavenward. Holy Mary, the Mother of God, is seen on the left, blessing the Church together with her son, in a gilded gold backdrop that symbolises the eternal uncreated light of God and his heavenly kingdom.
