Detail from The Conversion on the Way to Damascus, Caravaggio, 1600
As Wei Lian was flipping through the pages of an art history book in the public library on an ordinary day in the year 2004, she came across a painting by Caravaggio which gave her the sublime experience of being connected with Beauty. Since then, she has been on a journey to produce art pieces through which Beauty does its mysterious work--to awaken in souls the longing for the spiritual.

She graduated with a BFA majoring in photography in 2011 and worked as a librarian for six years while continuing her art practice at the same time. She got her MSc in Information Studies in 2019 and is currently pursuing a Master in Sacred Art. Inspired by the close relationship between gold leaf gilding and painting that existed centuries ago, she went to Australia to complete a Master gilding course in 2019 and is one of the few experienced gold leaf gilders based in Singapore.

In 2017, she decided to honour the divine inspiration that fuels her art practice with the name, 'Wrought by Light', recognising that she is just an artist privileged to make art using existing materials on earth which the Creator had brought into being from nothing. Two years later, this became Wrought by Light Art & Gilding when her artistic practice expanded to include gold leaf gilding for statue and furniture refurbishment.

In order to hone her skills and acquire new ones that would help her meet the demands of complex artistic projects and commissions, she has committed herself to continuous learning from master artists and craftsmen all over the world. Some of these wonderful teachers that she had learnt from include Harvest Crittenden, Sr Petra Clare and Michael Britton. Apart from learning, Wei Lian is also enthusiastic about sharing her knowledge with others and has given a few talks and workshops on the relationship between art and faith.

Her inspirations come from her faith, illuminated manuscripts, poetry, nature and the people around her.  She also writes and plays a few musical instruments in her spare time.

She has participated in local art exhibitions since 2007 and some of her artworks are with private collectors around the world.
